- The Sun's corona extends outward, becoming the solar wind, which consists of
- charged particles (protons, electrons, and helium ions). Blowing at 350 to over
- 2000 km per sec, the solar wind carries a million tons of matter into space
- every second (that's the mass of a giant tanker). It's not the mass or speed,
- however, that makes the solar wind potent. Our air is millions of times denser
- than the solar wind. When the solar wind meets the magnetosphere of the Earth or
- another planet, especially during and after solar maxima, auroras occur as a
- result in the magnetic polar regions.
